![]() The work of design duo Studio McGee – as seen on the hit Netflix series Dream Home Makeover – encapsulates the US version of the style, all modern Shaker kitchens, squashy off-white sofas and huge, artfully placed vases (and all lapped up by its three-million-plus Instagram followers). The modern farmhouse look has held sway in America for longer, perhaps because it particularly suits the large houses and even larger gardens that are the middle-class norm outside city centres. But while cottagecore is all frilled cushions, skirted sinks, vintage china and floral wallpaper, the farmhouse style is more pared back and contemporary rural style, but with an industrial edge, and an overriding sense of space. Perhaps the popularity of the modern farmhouse look has its roots in a similar yearning for a more outdoorsy lifestyle and a connection with the past. The “ cottagecore” or “ granny chic” trend that has taken off over the past few years, particularly among young people, stems partly from a nostalgic wish to return to a simpler, less hectic pace of life, and establish a greater connection with nature. “They were designed to house two or three generations of one family, who would all be looking after the farm, so they have traditional proportions and good-sized reception rooms.”įor others who haven’t moved to the country, however, a farmhouse-style interior can be just as seductive. “Most of those that are no longer part of a working farm have already been updated, modernised or extended, so they work really well for family living,” she points out. Although not everyone will want to take on a working farm when they relocate, the idea of living in a former farmhouse, with the clean air and outdoor pursuits that entails, has never been more appealing.Īccording to Sarah-Jane Bingham-Chick of estate agents Savills, demand for rural properties remains “through the roof”, particularly those, like farmhouses, with a significant amount of outdoor space. Thanks to the great exodus from the city to the country over the past two years – not to mention the success of TV shows such as Clarkson’s Farm and This Farming Life – the rural lifestyle has been almost fetishised since the start of the pandemic. So what makes this look so popular?įor some, it’s because they have, like Hoppen, actually moved to a former farmhouse or barn. “Modern farmhouse” espouses a relaxed yet stylish and contemporary approach to rural living, and was one of the most Googled interior design styles last year “modern rustic” was in the top five design trends according to Pinterest. It’s also a perfectly executed example of an interior-design style that is now much in demand. “It’s heavenly,” she says “just the space, the quiet and the country air is a change from the fast pace of London. The laid-back style of the interior was also inspired by the change in lifestyle it represented: once the renovation was complete, after a break in the building works during the first lockdown, Hoppen and her partner started to split their time between London and the country, and they continue to spend as many weekends as possible there. I also wanted a mix of vintage and modern classics, with a base of creased linens.” “The starting point was really the colour of the beams, which was a sandy tone,” she says, “so I chose greys, whites and black as the base colours. ![]() But she did take her cue from the bones of the building, and embraced a more relaxed look than she normally would. That’s not to say she suddenly developed a penchant for strong colour and maximalist pattern far from it. Yet, when she and her partner acquired this particular barn in the Cotswolds just over two years ago, which was at the time a derelict empty shell in need of renovation, its raw state inspired something of a decorative departure. Her name is synonymous with a luxurious, polished style and her signature neutral palette is a look that brings to mind London townhouses and sleek city penthouse apartments, rather than disused agricultural buildings. ![]() A dilapidated barn in the middle of the countryside is not a property one would immediately associate with the interior designer Kelly Hoppen.
